Likeβ-lactams,cephalosporinsinterferewithPBP(penicillinbindingprotein)activityinvolvedinthefinalphaseofpeptidoglycansynthesis.PBP’sareenzymeswhichcatalyzeapentaglycinecrosslinkbetweenalanineandlysineresiduesprovidingadditionalstrengthtothecellwall.Withoutapentaglycinecrosslink,theintegrityofthecellwallisseverelycompromisedandultimatelyleadstocelllysisanddeath.Resistancetocephalosporinsiscommonlyduetocellscontainingplasmidencodedβ-lactamases.Cefotaximesodiumhowever,islargelyresistanttoβ-lactamases.
