The mechanism of action of 5-azacytidine is currently debated; however, two likely mechanisms have been proposed. Because of its similarity to cytidine, 5-azacytidine is believed to be incorporated into DNA and RNA of bone marrow at high doses. At lower doses, 5-azacytidine is thought to inhibit DNA methyltransferase activity leading to a decrease in DNA methylation.
