BlasticidinSHClinhibitsproteinsynthesisinprokaryoticandeukaryoticcellsbybindingtotheribosomalP-sitewhichstrengthenstRNAbindingandslowsdownandpreventssubsequentpeptidesynthesis. ResistancetoblasticidinSisconferredbybsr,BSD,andblsresistancegenesisolatedfromBacilluscereusK55-S1,Aspergillusterreus,andStreptoverticillumspp,respectively. Thebsrresistancegeneisa420bpfragmentandencodesa15kDablasticidinSdeaminasewhichcatalyzesthereactionofblasticidinStodeaminohydroxyblasticidinS.DeaminohydroxyblasticidinSisaBIOLOGicallyinactivederivativeofblasticidinSanddoesnotinteractwithorinhibitprokaryoticoreukaryoticribosomes.
